After a scenic drive or trolley ride south from Estero Island over the Big Carlos Pass drawbridge, you'll find the Lovers Key / Carl E. Johnson State Recreation Area. The barrier islands known as Lovers Key, Inner Key, Long Key and Black Island make up the 712 acre park. Trams transport park visitors from two convenient parking areas to the 2½ miles of beautiful, white-sand Gulf of Mexico beach. Picnic tables, bicycle racks, a beach pavilion, outdoor showers, public telephones and environmentally friendly restroom facilities are available. A public boat ramp, located on the Estero Bay side of the park, allows access to the Estero Bay Aquatic Preserve and Gulf of Mexico waters. A canoe launching area is also available. Canoe, or throw your cast net into a series of lagoons, quiet tidal pools within the park's interior. Kayak the near-shore waters along the beautiful Gulf Beach, or through the gently-flowing currents of Big Carlos Pass. Fish for trout, snook, and redfish along the Estero Bay shoreline. Hike rustic trails along the spine of the barrier island, where you'll see gopher tortoise, osprey, marsh rabbits and raccoons. Breathtaking Gulf sunsets are sure to make your visit one you'll never forget.STATUS: Open 8am until Sunset 365 days a year. Parking for one is $2.00, parking for two to eight people is $4.00.
