A short walk, car, or trolley ride north from Fort Myers Beach puts you on San Carlos Island, home of the Ostego Bay Foundation's Marine Science Center. Inside you will find many exhibits about the beach, the estuary, storm water runoff, pollution and other fresh water inflow issues. Salt-water aquariums and touch tanks introduce you to local flora and fauna. The mission of the Ostego Bay Foundation is to promote understanding, preservation, and enhancement of our marine environment, through education, research and community involvement. The Ostego Bay Foundation's Marine Science Center sponsors a weekly, walking tour of the Marine Science Center, the Coast Guard Station, and the working waterfront and shrimping industry. You will learn all about the duties of the present day Coast Guard -- even what kind of work and how many people it takes to bring a shrimp cocktail from the ocean to your dinner table.
