Owned and operated by the Estero Island Historical Society, the Historic Cottage serves as host to the entrance of the Matanzas Pass Wilderness Preserve. It contains Calusa Indian artifacts, a collection of Estero Island sea shells, and other relics that depict the history of pioneer life on Estero Island. The fourth home built on Fort Myers Beach, the Cottage was once located on the Gulf of Mexico shoreline. There, it served its family for three generations before being converted to the Sand Castle Kindergarten, the Island's first preschool.
The Historic Cottage takes you back to a time on Fort Myers Beach when there was no air-conditioning, electricity, or even mosquitoe control.
STATUS: Open Wednesday and Saturday mornings, or by appointment. For more information and hours call (239) 463-0435.
LOCATION: Bay Road, Fort Myers Beach, Florida, 33931
